Refinishing vs. Replacing a Bathtub

There are many reasons for giving your bathtub a new look. Whether your existing one is simply old and unsightly or you’re remodeling the entire bathroom, resurfacing your tub can make a significant difference in the look of the room! When it comes down to getting the job done, the question remains: should you replace or refinish? Hopefully, by the end of this, you will decide that saving time, money and getting the job done right is the answer.

Replacing Your Bathtub Costs

The most basic tubs retail for as little as $300, which may be equal to or even less expensive than refinishing. Before you start tub shopping, you need to consider the hidden costs involved in replacing a bathtub, which can include:

  • Demolition and removal of the old tub typically adds $70 to $150 to the final price

  • Hiring a plumber to re-attach pipes costs $299, according to the national average

  • Installation of the new tub is where it really gets pricey costing around $2,896, according to the national average

Once you add everything up, you may be a little overwhelmed to see that $300 tub turns into a project that  ends up costing you more than $3,000!

Refinishing Your Bathtub Costs

To refinish a tub, most homeowners spend between $200 and $900 (according to Home Advisor), with the average cost coming in at around $460. If you consider all of the costs associated with replacing, it makes refinishing is a real bargain. Additionally, if you have an irreplaceable antique or rare bathtub, you likely want to keep it to preserve the charm of your home decor or the historical accuracy it may provide in an older home. Every bathtub is a little different, please reach out to us to get a FREE estimate for what it will cost to resurface your tub.

DIY versus Hiring Over the Top Resurfacing

Common DIY Mistakes

Although it may seem tempting to save money and try your hand at refinishing your tub all on your own, you may be biting off more than you can chew and this DIY project can become a nightmare and have several downfalls. Without thorough surface preparation, complete removal of the old silicone or old finish, and not allowing each layer to dry completely before adding the next one, can result in your newly refinished tub not being exactly what you expected and your tub may have a rough finish.

Other problems could include not having the proper equipment (which can get very costly) to refinish your tub resulting in brush or roll marks by using paint-on epoxy. There is a lot you need to know when resurfacing your tub, and if not done properly this can result in the finish looking smudged and unprofessional. If the tub feels tacky, even after you wait for the required amount of curing time, the coating might not have set correctly and then you might have to repeat the entire process all over again. There are a lot of things that can go wrong when doing the work yourself and you may not have the knowledge of how to fix the problems. These are just some of the reasons why it may save you time and money to just hire a pro.
